Which Would You Choose? II

Description

Barring the occasional exception, a child's tenth birthday is the day they can begin a journey with Pokémon and take on the Pokémon League. Some children may use a family pet, receive a gift from a friend or relative, or even borrow an older trainer's Pokémon to catch one for theirself. The most common way, however, is to select from three "Starter Pokémon" distributed by Pokémon Professors and other responsible institutions.

Starter Pokémon are, as previously stated, a group of three Pokémon a trainer may choose from. They are of differing types; most often, they are Grass, Fire, and Water Type Pokémon. Which three Pokémon differ from region to region, although it is possible for a distributor to obtain extra-regional Starters. There are those who often wonder why certain Pokémon are selected to be Starters while others are not. A good example of this puzzlement is the Unova region, where the starters are Snivy, Tepig, and Oshawott, despite there being three primate Pokémon who match the typical typing and, sometimes, the abilities of a Starter Pokémon. The answer is rather simple: Starter Pokémon are of the right temperament.

A Starter Pokémon is very loyal, docile, patient, and friendly, especially when compared to most other first Pokémon. While they of course all have their own species-related quirks and individual personalities, they all have these qualities that are perfect for a beginning trainer. They are inclined to listen and obey, to be patient with any shortcomings, and to stick by them and be a real part of the team. Unfortunately, these traits that make them so great for starting trainers also make them very rare outside of trainer teams, breeding circles, and distributor collections. While they can survive, and some can even overcome their docile nature, the Pokémon chosen as Starters are less fit for natural competition than other Pokémon in their environments. They are often not selfish, forceful, or intimidating enough to nudge out their competitors. This unfortunately make it difficult for these Pokémon to thrive in the wild outside of preserves and special environments. It is fortunate that these beautiful Pokémon have proven to be such a great fit for trainers, as it means they are able to live on with the help of humans who care about them.

This particular poster seen often around the Johto Region is an advertisement for the laboratories of the esteemed Professor Elm. Professor Elm is a distributor of the Johto Starter Pokémon Chikorita, Cyndaquil, and Totodile. While he receives them from suppliers like most other distributors, he occasionally happens upon specimens in the wild which he takes in to give to a good trainer. The Totodile depicted here must have been one of these rare wild starters, as it is clearly scaring that poor Cyndaquil.
